4 Ways to Safeguard Yourself from Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting Myths

4 Ways to Safeguard Yourself from Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting Myths

This weekend I was teaching a childbirth education class and we were talking about breastfeeding.  One of my students asked if it was true that breastfeeding moms should stay away from broccoli because it would make their babies gassy and fussy.  When she asked, she...

My clients say…

“I will always remember the way that Taylor stayed so close to me as I was facing my fears of pushing my daughter out into this world and whispered in my ear that I could do it, I was safe, and I was doing wonderfully. These sweet words of encouragement were just the touch I needed to have the confidence to bring our daughter into the world.” – Fiona

Over the course of the past 6 months, we have drea Over the course of the past 6 months, we have dreamed this collaboration into existence and are grateful to now share it with you, our community. We can't do this without support, so we are seeking your help.

The mission of the Seacoast Perinatal Loss Collaborative (@seacoastplc) is to normalize, connect, and support. We aim to provide local support to those who have experienced the tragic death of a baby through pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or in the first few months of life. We do this through community outreach to deliver care packages to families and by weaving a web of support for families on the Seacoast of NH and Maine.

Our vision is to connect families experiencing infant loss to their community. The highest form of community care is supporting others in a time of deep grief. Here's how we hope to do this:
.
Normalize: we are a safe space for people experiencing infant loss. These families are not alone, despite the feeling of isolation that surfaces.
.
Connect: families experiencing loss can reach out to us. Our care coordinators connect them to professional resources, answer their questions, and connect them to peers, if desired.
.
Support: we work creatively to support each family in the way that they need. This includes, but is not limited to, delivering care packages to help them during this time.
.
It's only the beginning, and there's much work to do. Our community needs us and we need you to help build this Collaborative. If you have skills or expertise in the realm of infant loss, if you have non-profit knowledge and expertise, and/or if you are passionate about supporting our efforts, please fill out the contact form (link in my bio) and we will follow up with you. You can commit as much or as little as feels right to you. Thank you for your support of this important mission.

.
Ironically, this short trip away ended up highlighting that I needed even more boundaries and space in my life. With the added commitment of healing and extensive OT, I all of a sudden found myself with almost no white space in my life and not enough time for my children or my partner.
.
I don’t want to live a life in which I suddenly cannot carve out any time when one thing changes. And I am lucky enough that I don’t have to. So this is my season of scaling way back. Setting boundaries, letting go of things, and learning that I don’t have to be everything to everybody. And committing to only taking on as much as I can and do those things well.
“Mommy, you have some gray hairs!” . “Yep so “Mommy, you have some gray hairs!”
.
“Yep son, I do. And with this gray hair and age comes more gratitude, peace, comfort in my own skin, presence, and less f**** given about the the things that don’t actually matter.”
.
What can we let go of to make space for the things that matter? I believe there’s more for each of us. Carrying this intention into what’s sure to be an intense week.

I have been somewhat absent here. I’m focusing m I have been somewhat absent here. I’m focusing more on all of this this and honoring the message I’m receiving from myself that I need to scale back my time in this Instagram space and fill it with time with myself and my people. Trusting this as an important step on the path.
Interviewing potential prenatal care providers is Interviewing potential prenatal care providers is easier than you think! You don’t need to have an idea of what type of birth you want yet or any clue about your birth preferences (and many people don’t when they’re newly pregnant and in need of prenatal care). What you need to do is find someone who gives you the answers you want to hear to a few main questions.
.
1️⃣ “How do you support the birth choices of the families you support?” If a provider can authentically say that they’ll support your choices EVEN IF they differ from the provider’s recommendation, this is a good sign.
.
2️⃣ “How do you envision the decision making process unfolding if we are faced with tough decisions during pregnancy and birth.” Here you’re looking for an indication that they view YOU as the decision-maker.
.
3️⃣ “How does the call schedule work for your practice?” You want to understand who might show up for your birth and decide if you’re comfortable with the arrangement.
.
4️⃣ “Do all the providers in your practice share your philosophy and approach?” If you like this provider, but may or may not end up seeing them during your birth, you want to know what to expect from other providers.
.
These questions offer a great start to help you interview providers and choose one. Remember also, that as you start sharing more specific choices throughout pregnancy, you’re still looking for a level of support that honors you as the decision maker. If you reach a point where you’re questioning your choice, it’s never too late to find and choose a new care provider. Know that you are worth it and this experience matters so very much.
